Brown or greyish patches on the forehead, cheeks, upper lip or chin: melasma is one of the most common concerns among our customers. The good news: with a suitable routine and plenty of consistency, it is possible to reduce its appearance. Here is what you need to know.
What is melasma?
Melasma is a form ofhyperpigmentation : in certain areas, the skin produces too much melanin, the pigment that gives it its colour. It mainly affects women, especially during pregnancy (known as the "mask of pregnancy") or when using hormonal contraception. Dark and mixed-race skin is more prone to it, because it naturally produces more melanin.
Why does it appear?
- The sun : this is the main aggravating factor. UV rays stimulate melanin production, even on cloudy days.
- Hormones : pregnancy, the contraceptive pill, hormonal treatments.
- Genetics : melasma is more common when other women in the family have it.
- Irritating products : some cosmetics or harsh habits weaken the skin and keep the patches going.
Melasma or simple dark spots?
Melasma usually forms symmetrical patches (on both sides of the face) with irregular edges. Marks left by a spot or an injury tend to be isolated and localised. If in doubt, a dermatologist can make the right diagnosis.
The 3-pillar routine
1. Protect, every day
This is the foundation, with no exceptions: sun protection every morning, reapplied if you spend a long time outdoors. Without protection, no skincare can give lasting results.
2. Moisturise
Well-hydrated skin is more resilient and renews itself better. A moisturiser morning and evening, even on oily skin, helps keep the skin barrier healthy.
3. Even out gently and consistently
Targeted care works gradually: consistency matters more than intensity. Allow several weeks before judging a result, and avoid using several strong products at the same time.
Our Melasma Kit
Our Melasma Kit combines a serum and a cream designed to support a routine targeting uneven pigmentation. To strengthen your anti-dark-spot routine, you can pair it withAlpha Arbutin.
The key points
- Sun protection every day, even when it is cloudy.
- Moisturising morning and evening.
- A targeted routine followed patiently, over several weeks.
